Moving Forward: Trauma Recovery Group
Cedar’s Continuing Care department is excited to introduce our Moving Forward: Post-traumatic Growth program. It is based on the successful Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) offered as part of our inpatient programming. Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can result from witnessing or experiencing a traumatic event(s) such as adverse childhood experiences, death threats, natural disasters, serious accidents and sexual assault. Such events are relived in the form of flashbacks and/or nightmares that activate and sustain emotional and psychological dysregulation. These challenges can include anger, fear, sadness, shame, all of which underscore emotional detachment from self and others. According to Maitlis (2020) CPT provides the potential for “a transformative change” that frequently manifests as post-traumatic growth (PTG).
Moving Forward: Post-traumatic Growth is a 10-week program in which participants will begin to examine the complex relationship between trauma experiences and PTSD. Using Socratic dialogue, participants will identify ‘stuck points’ that contribute to problematic thought processing directly associated with specific trauma experiences. As an example, using a series of worksheets participants can explore erroneous self-blame for the trauma they have experienced. As coping strategies are incorporated to address these stuck points, wider trauma-related themes related to control, esteem, intimacy, safety, and trust are explored. The program concludes with a comparative examination and discussion of pre and post treatment changes to trauma-related thought processing capabilities.
