Currie Gillespie

Administrative Support

Currie was born in Hull, Quebec and growing up never had a real chance to grow roots – living in many communities across Canada.  As a young adult, he headed to Winnipeg, Manitoba for a new opportunity.  Over the next 40 years he met and married his wife, raised their three children and had a successful career as a Chartered Human Resource Professional.
In 1993 Currie had a brain aneurysm, which was life changing.  Currie faced his own recovery, learning much about neuroscience and neuroplasticity and just how that would aid in his journey.  Cycling played a huge role in his recovery; it was the mechanism which helped him to ‘rewire’ his brain and regain motor skills - before he was walking a straight line, he was able to ride one.  Cycling became a natural companion and passion.

Years later, Currie was again introduced to these same concepts, only in a different way.  With cautious optimism he supported his wife’s choice to seek treatment for her alcoholism.  Over the coming years, he found his own healing and freedom as they both grew ‘in recovery’.  It was this journey that lead them to make the decision to move from Winnipeg to Vancouver Island.

Recovery has given Currie and his family not just one new lease on life but two.  It’s this experience that lead him to becoming employed at Cedars – what he calls his passion project.  Currie is always looking for ways to support others on their journey to recovery, knowing intimately the gift it’s given to him and his own family he is passionate about helping others to find the same.  When he’s not here on site, you can find him with his family, exploring the island and of course cycling his way to serenity.  You can track Currie with his hash tag on social #ButtsOnBikes to see where the road takes him.
